CHAPTER TWENTY ONE

Why can’t I stop the butterflies?

SEREPHINA MERCER.

I wake up in the morning feeling a lot better than the night before. I’m also determined to not let Kade Hammond get to me. So what if he’s a jerk? I’ve known plenty of jerks in my life. He’s just the first one I’ve ever had a crush on—though, not anymore.

At least… that’s what I’m telling myself.

So what if his jade green eyes make my heart skip a beat? And what if I get butterflies in my stomach every time he smiles at me? I don’t have to worry about it anyway because he won’t smile at me anymore.

I take a little extra time getting ready this morning. It’s Saturday, so it doesn’t matter anyway. I plan on spending time at the beach, hopefully with Kade’s much nicer siblings.

When I come down the stairs, I’m surprised when Kade hands me a coffee cup. It has the same logo from yesterday, which excites me.

“Is it poisoned?” I joke, hoping the animosity is gone from yesterday. I prefer for things to go back to normal.

He doesn’t respond, he just looks at me with a scowl on his face that says he didn’t find my joke funny at all.

I push a piece of hair behind my ear. “You know, you could get somebody else to babysit me. My dad really won’t care who is my bodyguard, as long as they do a good job.”

“No,” Kade says, but his voice sounds growly.

Well then…

I sit down on the couch, trying to think of a way to broach the subject again. I chew on the side of my lip, looking at Kade, who is looking everywhere except at me.

“It’s clear that you being with me makes you upset. Why make us both miserable?” I ask.

He glares at me. “You’re staying with me and that’s final—I don’t particularly care how miserable I make you.”

Of course not. Why would it matter at all how I feel?

I shrug. “Whatever. I was just offering, Kade. No need to be a jerk about it.”

He crosses his arms over his chest, saying nothing.

Great—the silent treatment. Though, I suppose it is a step up from being yelled at.

“Can you take me to your house?” I stand, ready to head out the door. “Nate wants to teach me how to surf.”

“You can’t surf with stitches.” He rolls his eyes like it’s the most absurd thing he’s ever heard of.

“Right.” I frown. “I forgot about that.”

“You forgot?” He furrows his brows, shaking his head. “How can you just forgot that you got shot yesterday?”

I shrug.

He doesn’t say anything for a moment, his lips turning down in the corners. “We can hang out at my house, but you’re not swimming until your wounds are healed.”

“Fine.” I roll my eyes. “You’re so bossy.”

Kade takes a step closer, his green eyes seeming to darken as he towers over me. “You haven’t seen anything yet, Sunshine.”

I raise an eyebrow. “Sunshine?”

But he doesn’t answer. Instead, he motions toward the door. “Get a move on.
